About us
Located 2 miles from Andover in Hampshire, Westover Market Garden is a half-acre, no-dig market garden developed on the edge of a former arable field at Westover Farm.
Working with Worthy Earth, our team has built raised beds, a polytunnel, a small orchard, and a fruit cage for berries. We have ambitious plans, including introducing chickens and other ventures, but we are now just beginning our first growing season in 2025.
Our mission is to grow delicious, seasonal, organic vegetables that are eaten fresh within roughly 10 miles of the farm. Our market garden aims to improve our health through the availability of local, healthy food while providing a source of community engagement and education. By doing this, we can do our bit to build a truly local and more sustainable food system.
Our goals
A space for real food
Westover Farm is an arable farm producing a variety of crops, including winter wheat, spring barley, field beans, and oilseed rape, all of which are cultivated on a three-year rotation. However, these crops are not immediately available for humans to eat; they require industrial processing and are largely not consumed locally.
Therefore, the goal of Westover Market Garden is to produce fresh fruit and vegetables that can be used and enjoyed by people in the local area.
A space for biodiversity
On Westover Farm, we work hard to look after the land and biodiversity through protected field margins and hedges, as well as reducing agrochemical use wherever possible. Transitioning to more sustainable farming practices, such as no-dig methods and organic farming, is crucial, but it takes time. We are beginning this shift on a small scale in our market garden.
Our market garden uses ‘no-dig’ method meaning we disturb as little soil as possible, planting directly into it. This means there are always living roots in the soil, keeping the surface covered with a range of plants to build topsoil quality and protect it from the drying sun, wind, and excessive rain. Restoring the soil also increases biodiversity – from soil biota to the insects that act as pollinators and pest control.
A space for learning
Since most of the UK population lives in urban areas and much of our food is grown abroad, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for people to be part of the land and food systems that feed them.
That’s why a key part of our work is to include the local community in our market garden. In particular, we aim to work with local schools to provide an outdoor classroom for learning about food and farming.
